The NUAIR Alliance Hosts FAA Public Meeting
Tuesday, September 29, 2015
A public meeting required by Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was organized by Griffiss International Airport and the NUAIR Alliance at Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica, NY on September 29, 2015. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss innovation and opportunities at the Griffiss Test Site and the Certification of Exemption (COE). The Section 333 Exemption process provides operators who wish to pursue safe and legal entry into the National Air Space (NAS) a competitive advantage in the Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) marketplace, thus discouraging illegal operations and improving safety. The meeting aids both public and private sector stakeholders to better understand the value the Test Site and COE provide in furthering UAS integration through research, development, and operational testing.
More than 70 unmanned flights have been launched at Griffiss since it was cleared for takeoff by the Federal Aviation Administration in August 2014. Among these was the first-ever flight of a pilot-less fixed-wing aircraft. A focus at Griffiss is on technologies to help UAS sense and avoid obstacles, like avoiding collisions and crashes. This includes installation of state-of-the-art technology at Griffiss and at approved locations in Central and Northern New York.
